The new logo was the creation of Austin Community College commercial art student Beverly Kennon, a transfer from the University of Houston. Kennon was also a full-time social worker in Austin. In February, she won a contest conceived by Student Government Association president Phil Grimley and organized by Commercial Art program leader Luis Guerra. Thirty-three artists submitted entries that were judged by Sybil Brooks, art director of Texas Monthly magazine, Jim Franklin, who made the armadillo an Austin icon, and renowned Austin artist Amado Pena.

The logo was a triple profile: the recently named eagle ACC mascot and two interlocked human faces, one white one black. Kennon said the image evoked feelings of community.
