The Austin Community College District (ACC) breaks ground on renovations at its Rio Grande Campus 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 10. The event is free and open to the public.

“This campus represents a legacy of learning that spans more than a century,” says Dr. Richard Rhodes, ACC president/CEO. “As we re-envision the future of education at Rio Grande Campus, ACC remains committed to honoring its history.”
The Rio Grande Campus Main Building was originally Austin High School and became an ACC campus in 1975. Renovations will preserve its architectural features and update facilities. Scheduled to open in late 2019, plans feature:
- A three-level, 168-seat ACCelerator learning lab — integrated with a campus library and spaces for academic coaching and small group sessions.
- Two enclosed courtyards – one to serve as a commons area for studying and relaxing, and second suitable for group gatherings. Special roof material will permit natural, ambient light.

- Six science labs.
- Expanded spaces for ACC’s Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
- High-speed Internet network with building-wide wireless access.
- Park-like outdoor spaces.
Project teams will protect the building’s rich heritage during construction. The façade will be preserved, while new flooring and finishes will combine design elements of the past with modern-day conveniences.
