Best Practices in CBE Design and Delivery

Inaugural Annual Conference

The Fast Track to Success Project and Institute for Competency-Based Education invite colleagues to submit proposals for presentations, panels, course demos, lightning talks, and competency-based education (CBE) showcases in the inaugural, annual conference on best practices in CBE design and delivery. This conference will provide a forum for sharing lessons learned, strategies, outlooks, data, and elements of CBE pedagogy at all levels of CBE instruction and learning in higher education. The theme of the conference is Innovate, Create, Motivate! We welcome all submissions aligned with this theme. The program will be selected through this open call for submissions and a review by the conference steering committee.

Presentations

Presentations describe, but are not limited to, a current CBE project, research project, classroom experience, teaching techniques, curricular design, evidence of student success and engagement with CBE, and the future of CBE. Each presentation will be maximum 30 minutes in length including Q & A.

The submission for a presentation will include a maximum 250-word summary that includes the title, objective, significance, and description of the session.

Panels

The purpose of the panel is to present diverse views and multiple perspectives on a specific topic. An effective panel is one with four participants including the moderator. Each panel submission will include the names and institutional affiliations of the panelists along with a maximum three-sentence position statement from each panelist. In addition, the panel submission will include a maximum 250-word overview of the panel including the topic, objective, significance, and description of the session.

Lightning Talks

A lightning talk is a very short presentation that lasts no more than 5 minutes. Several lightning talks will be delivered in a single session. The purpose of the lightning talk is to provide a compelling overview of a set of diverse topics. Each presenter is limited to five slides. The submission will be a maximum 250-word description of the lightning talk.

CBE Program Showcase

The CBE Program Showcase will provide selected institutions with the opportunity to present details of their CBE offerings in the form of a digital or print poster session. The program showcase submission will be maximum 250 words describing the program to be showcased and the significance of the presentation for this conference. In addition, each institution will include a list of presenters. Presenters will need to use their own computers to display the digital posters.

Course Demo

Selected institutions will demonstrate a CBE course offering as it is delivered to the students. Presenters will submit the name of the institution and the course they will present along with a maximum 150-word description of the course that will be demonstrated.

General Submission and Conference Guidelines

Each presenter will:

  • Register for the conference (free in the inaugural year) by May 1, 2017. A registration link will be provided at the time of notification.
  • Complete a presenter form by April 10. The presenter form will be included in the notification of acceptance to present at the conference.
  • Be responsible for his or her own travel expenses.
  • Notify the organizers of any changes to sessions by May 1, 2017.
  • Submissions can be in APA or MLA format
