ChrisBerniChristine Berni

Professor
Chris was born and raised in New Hampshire, went to college in Boston, and earned a Ph.D. in modern British and American Literature at the University of Rochester in upstate New York in 1995. She taught for three years at Kent State University but found herself in search of a more dynamic city to serve as the site of her adventures. In 1998 she had the great good fortune to land on her feet at ACC, where she has enjoyed teaching composition and literature ever since. Her dream retirement job is to tend lemurs at the Duke University Lemur Center.

HeidiJuelHeidi Juel

Associate Professor
Heidi Juel has been teaching English courses at ACC since 2007.  She graduated from the University of Minnesota with degrees in English, Secondary Education, and German.  Not deterred by the heat of Austin, she came to the University of Texas to teach and study Native American Literature.  She now teaches Native American Literature in the Honors Program at ACC.  She appreciates American Literature overall and enjoys sharing and cultivating in students a similar passion for literature.  She writes poetry as well and most recently presented some of her work at the Two-Year College English Association’s annual conference.

Barbara Williams Lewis is Professor of English and Assistant Dean of Academics. She has lectured widely throughout the United States as both a scholarly and motivational speaker.  Her publications appear in works edited by David Middleton (Toni Morrison: Selected Criticism of Contexts and Texts), Ronald Gottesman (The Encyclopedia of Violence), and The Dale Research Corporation (Contemporary Criticism and Biography of American Authors). She is the author of Sherrod Village: A Memoir (2014).

David is a native and lifelong Texan, born in Freeport on the Gulf Coast and living in Austin since 1972.  He is proud to say that his first degree was an AA from Brazosport College in 1971.  He received his BA from UT Austin in 1974, MA from the University of Houston in 1976, PhD from UT Austin in 1988.  He taught briefly at Univ of Houston and San Antonio College but is proud to have been teaching at Austin Community College for 29 years.  He has held many administrative posts over the years at ACC but always returns to the classroom. Variety is the spice, but teaching is the most fun.

WendyLymWendy Lym

Professor
Wendy Lerner Lym grew up in San Antonio and graduated from Trinity University. She then moved to Austin, where she earned an MA and Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Texas in 2004; in school, she had the inspiring experience of researching Milton and Shakespeare while cultivating her love of pop culture. Since joining ACC in 2007, Dr. Lym has taught an array of composition and literature classes, including an Honors course. She has developed programs to promote college readiness initiatives across the state of Texas and served her department in curriculum development and assessment. Dr. Lym’s work has been published in College Teaching and the Community College Journal of Research and Practice.

KazelMorganKazel Morgan

Professor
Kazel Morgan has been teaching at ACC since 2001.  She holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. in American literature from the University of Texas at Austin, and a B.A. in English from the University of Houston at Clear Lake.  She serves on the English Department Curriculum Committee and the Faculty Senate, and she is founder and co-chair of the Service Learning and Civic Engagement Committee.  In addition to regular composition and literature courses, Dr. Morgan teaches Service Learning and Community-Based Writing courses.  She has also taught Honors courses in horror fiction and the ghost story, and in Native American fiction.

Sean Nighbert was born and raised in Kentucky.  He moved to Texas in 1996, to pursue a Master’s of Fine Arts Degree in Fiction at Southwest Texas State. He attended Rhodes College in Memphis, TN where he received a BA in History and a BA in English.  After graduating, he attended Morehead State University, where he received an MA in English.  He taught undergraduate courses at Morehead and Southwest Texas State while attending those universities.  Prior to joining the faculty at ACC, Professor Nighbert was a faculty member at St. Philip’s College in San Antonio for 16 years.  He served as department chair for 13 years, and was active in the faculty senate.  Sean enjoys traveling with his bride and two children 21, and 16.

JoeOConnellJoseph O’Connell

Associate Professor
Joe O’Connell received a B.A. in journalism from the school that shall always be known (to him) as Southwest Texas State University and returned there to earn an MFA in creative writing. He worked as a reporter/editor around Texas and penned columns about the Texas film industry for the Dallas Morning News, Austin Chronicle and Austin American-Statesman. He is the author of the novel-in-stories Evacuation Plan and director of documentary film Love and Other Stunts. He’s taught at ACC since 1997 including honors courses with a focus on the many voices of Texas.

MarcellaPhillipsMarcella Phillips

Professor
I have taught ACC’s composition and literature courses and also courses for Honors, Developmental, Technical Writing, Creative Writing, and Distance Learning. I’ve served as department chair and assistant department chair and was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Service to ACC. I have also taught for Tarrant County College and Corsicana College and am a Certified Texas Teacher, with a 96 on the National Teacher Exam and a perfect score on the exam for Texas teachers. I worked my way through college, earning an A.A. in speech and drama at Tyler Junior College, and a B.A. in English with a minor in speech and a Master’s in English with a minor in counseling from The University of Texas at Arlington and have Master’s work in counseling from The University of North Texas at Denton and Alumni Scholarships for Excellence. I’ve also worked in journalism and advertising and performed in community theatre. I have traveled in twenty-seven countries and enjoy all of the arts, particularly painting, photography, and architecture and am an avid gardener, cook, photographer, and nature enthusiast.

BrindaRoyBrinda Roy

Professor
Brinda earned her undergraduate degree in English from India before making the trans-oceanic journey to Rice University in Houston for graduate school. Her Ph.D. (2001) examined the intersection of narrative, identity, and empire in late-Victorian history and literature. After graduation she relocated to Austin when it was still the nation’s best-kept secret, and almost immediately found her home and vocation in Austin Community College. She teaches a variety of courses including Composition and Argument, World Literature, and British Literature. In her spare time she is mother to two spunky children with whom she plots many adventures to faraway lands, notably Tasmania and Japan.

Anne-MarieThomasAnne-Marie Thomas

Professor

Anne-Marie Thomas has been an instructor at ACC since 2001, and during that time she has taught most of the English department’s available courses, including Honors classes. She has had a lifelong interest in science fiction, which sent her down a path that would eventually include both a master’s thesis (University of Arkansas) and a doctoral dissertation (Louisiana State University) on SF, as well as the publication of a text devoted to the analysis of the genre: Wiley-Blackwell’s The Science Fiction Handbook (co-authored with M. Keith Booker). Dr. Thomas currently serves as faculty advisor to the ACC chapter of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
