Lilly Conference Scholarships

The Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL) is offering an opportunity for ACC Faculty (Instructors, Counselors, Librarians) to attend The 5th Annual Lilly Conference for College and University Teaching and Learning ­to be held January 4-6, 2018 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Austin. The Lilly Conference is not only a wonderful opportunity to learn and develop as educators, but also a great opportunity to network. The Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL) will provide funding for 29 full-conference registrations. The majority of the scholarships will be reserved for new applicants, but previous winners of FCTL Lilly Scholarships who have completed all their projects are welcome to apply to attend again. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage faculty to attend this invaluable conference and to bring lessons learned back to their faculty colleagues. Professional Development Credit for attendance will be provided through your Department Chairs.

What is the Lilly Conference?

The Lilly Conference for College and University Teaching and Learning formed over 35 years ago with the purpose of providing a platform for presentations in Scholarship in Teaching and Learning. Austin has hosted the conference for the past three years. Programs for past sessions can be found on the Lilly Conference website.

Participants come from across the United States, representing nearly every discipline found in higher education, including faculty and administrators. They are at various stages of their academic careers ranging from post­ doctoral positions, adjunct faculty, new faculty, mid­-career faculty, seasoned faculty, and even emeritus faculty. The conference maintains the same overall theme: “Evidence-Based Teaching and Learning.” 2017 Tracks and sub­-themes include the following:

  • Engaging and Motivating Students
  • Innovative Pedagogical Approaches
  • Multiculturalism/Diversity/Inclusion

  • Teaching Well with Classroom Technologies
  • Teaching Well Unplugged

The conference program offers a variety of sessions so you can match your learning preference to the presentations formats: 50­ minute concurrent sessions, 20 ­minute presentations, 30 ­minute round-table discussions, traditional plenary addresses, and poster presentations. Conference presentations are selected through a blind peer­ review process. Attendees will be offered an afternoon snack on Thursday. On Friday there will be breakfast, a morning coffee break, lunch and an afternoon snack. On the last day, Saturday, breakfast, a morning coffee break, lunch and an afternoon snack will be provided.

Throughout the three day conference, participants are given the opportunity to exchange ideas, build a repertoire of take­-home skills, and network with faculty colleagues.

How do I apply for an FCTL Lilly Conference Scholarship?

The deadline to apply for a Lilly Conference Scholarship is FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2017.

Application Process:

  1. Check your calendar availability for attending the conference and block your schedule.
  2. In return for covering the cost of attendance of the conference ($495 value), the FCTL will require each scholarship recipient to share some of the knowledge they acquire at the conference with other ACC faculty. Make sure to review the post-conference project expectations (in toggle below) prior to applying.
  3. Complete the application indicating your interest in attending the Lilly Conference.

Selected applicants will be notified mid November.

Post-Conference Project Expectations

Upon completion of the conference, scholarship recipients will be expected to share their knowledge with faculty colleagues and demonstrate how they benefitted from attending the conference. This will include both writing a blog post for the FCTL’s Faculty Forum Blog AND completing one of the project examples below.

After attending the conference, you will first create a project description and goals using the FCTL Project Report Form provided (below). The completed form is due to the FCTL Scholarship Committee by February 9, 2018. You will then be expected to follow through with the actual project before the end of the Fall 2018 semester, which may include one of the following examples below or a similar method of your own design:

Example 1: Present one of the techniques you learned at the conference by presenting your own hour­-long workshop. You may present at the time and campus of your choice.

Example 2: Share lessons learned, effective strategies and teaching tools in group settings (such as a campus Chalk Talk).

Example 3: Create a new class module based on what you learned and share it with departmental colleagues.
