RNSG 2213/2160 – Mental Health Nursing (EVC)


  • When: Monday, January 27, 2020, 8:30 a.m.
  • Where: EVC Rm. 8105 (See below for information about RNSG 2160 Clinical Rotation.)
  • What to bring:  Hard copy of syllabi signature page for RNSG 2213 and RNSG 2160 (print from Blackboard), a copy of class material per Blackboard announcements, copy of course calendar (use the final version posted on Blackboard), Psychiatric Nursing textbook (see “Required Texts” below).
  • Orientation to the mental health courses will be followed by Module 1 (Concepts of Mental Health Nursing) and lab on Therapeutic Communication (see “Lab” button on Blackboard for documents to review and bring to lab).

Class Schedule

  • When: Mondays, 8:30 a.m. – 12 noon. Refer to the final version of the calendar on Blackboard for specifics.

Required Texts

  • Varcarolis, E.M. (2017). Essentials of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, 3rd edition. Elsevier.

Skills Labs

  • When and where: Integrated with lectures in EVC Rm. 8105.
  • What to bring:  No special attire is required.
  • See course calendar for schedule of labs.


  • When:  See course calendar for specific dates and times for theory exams.
  • Where: EVC Nursing Computer Lab, Rm. 8307
  • There will be 3 unit exams and a comprehensive final exam.
  • HESI: The Psychiatric Nursing specialty HESI test for Level 3 will be given on Monday, Apr. 27. Directions for registration and payment are on the ADN website using the HESI link. Your Evolve username and login will be needed to access the test. An opportunity to re-test will be offered on Monday, May 11. See course calendar.

RNSG 2160 Clinical

  • When:  Clinical will be a Wed., Thu., or Fri. 12-hour shift. The shift starts at 6:30 a.m.
  • Where:  Austin State Hospital at 4100 Guadalupe Street or Ascension Seton Shoal Creek Hospital at 3501 Mills Ave.

Clinical Orientation

  • When and where: Students will have a mandatory on-campus orientation on Wed., Jan. 29 for Austin State and Shoal Creek hospitals. More information about clinical orientation will be distributed in advance of the first week of school.
  • What to bring: Prior to attending clinical, students must provide documentation of Clinical Clearance. Students must wear school uniforms to orientation.
