Austin Community College’s Surgical Technology Program has opened Spring 2020 admissions to include students who are currently in the process of completing prerequisite courses.
Qualified applicants are students who have completed or who are currently enrolled for Fall 2019 in the following 4 prerequisite courses:
- BIOL 2401: Anatomy & Physiology I (or Human Anatomy)
- BIOL 2402: Anatomy & Physiology II (or Human Physiology)
- BIOL 2420: Microbiology
- HPRS 2300: Pharmacology
The remaining 2 prerequisite courses must be completed by the end of the Spring 2020 semester:
- 3‐credit hour College Level Math Course (MATH 1333 not accepted)
- HPRS 1106 or HPRS 1206: Medical Terminology
All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better to qualify. Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply now. Applications will be reviewed and, if approved, acceptance will be “provisional” and on the condition they successfully complete (grade “C” or better) the 6 prerequisite courses within the time frames out lined above. Failure to do so will result in the application being denied or withdrawal from the program.
Students who plan to complete a Math and/or Medical Terminology course while in the first semester of the Surgical Technology Program need to be aware that the Surgical Technology Program courses can be challenging and time consuming. Good time management skills would be necessary with this option.
The conditional admission applies to the Spring 2020 semester only and applies to the first students meeting the requirements since the program is filled on a first come first served basis.
In addition to completing prerequisites, applicants must upload necessary documents to an online CastleBranch account. Required documents include proof of immunizations and the verification page indicating completion of a mandatory online Information Session for Surgical Technology students and a TEAS test score (no minimum score required).
The program offers an Associate of Applied Science degree and a certificate. The program courses are completed in 3 semesters. More information can be found at the Surgical Technology website.
Surgical Technologists are in high demand and now is a great time to launch a career in this field.
