Advisory Committee Members

Ina Midkiff is the Department Chair of Marketing, Fashion Merchandising, and Real Estate. She has taught at Austin Community College for over 20 years. She earned a BBA and an MBA in Finance and Marketing from Tarleton State University. Over the years she has served as Division Chair of Business Studies Division, Department Chair of Management, Associate Dean at Cypress Creek Campus, Assistant Department Chair of Marketing, Fashion Merchandising, and Real Estate and served as an officer of Austin Community College's Faculty Association.

Nick Sarantakes has worked extensively in many marketing positions that include retail, logistics, sales, and e-commerce. He served as an Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin for 3 years. In addition, he served at ACC as an Adjunct Instructor in Management, Full Time Instructor in Management, Department Chair in Marketing, and later as Assistant Dean for Business Studies, and Department Chair for Marketing, Real Estate, and Financial Management.

Rita Banninger earned a B.S. in Human Ecology, with a major in Fashion Design from Kansas State University. Rita's fashion background includes working in jewelry retail in Manhattan, Kansas, doing window displays and sales as well as being coordinating stylist for the Austin Museum of Natural History art opening the winter of 1990. Rita was nominated for an Austin Circle of Theater Award for Outstanding Costume Design for the theater production of "The Beggar's Opera," produced by The Public Domain Theater, 1995.

Stephanie Dunbar, ACC Assistant Professor of Theatre, has been designing costumes for both the stage and screen in the Austin and Los Angeles areas for the last ten years. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Costume Design from California State University, Long Beach. Previous productions include large-scale musicals such as Sideshow and Spring Awakening, classics like The Glass Menagerie, and contemporary works such as Ajax in Iraq and Pool of Bethesda.

Rebecca Gonzalez is a multicultural specialist with a background in Communications, Marketing, Organizational Development, and Training and Development. She is the Owner and President of The Gonzalez Group based in San Antonio, Texas. Her clients have included State Farm, Novartis, Energizer, Monsanto, Johnson and Johnson, Motorola, Georgia Pacific, Josten’s, Kraft Foods, and Altria.

Margot Harmatuk is a Financial Center Manager for University Federal Credit Union.  She has over 25 years in the financial industry.  Her areas of expertise include: corporate trainer, legal assistant, mortgage lender, excellence in customer service, overseeing administrative supervision of all branch office and personnel activities , ensuring efficient operation within the framework of federal and state laws and  NCUA regulations.

Leland (Lee) Pilz is Assistant Professor of Marketing at Concordia University Texas.  Before starting at Concordia in 2014, he had a long career in the advertising agency business.  He started out on Madison Avenue in New York, and later moved to Texas where he worked in well-known ad agencies in Houston, Dallas and Austin.  Most recently he worked at GSD&M in Austin for 16 years with clients such as Walmart, Southwest Airlines and the U.S. Air Force.

Kimberly Shumski Sacco received her bachelor's degree in Fine Art from the University of South Alabama. She attained an Associate Degree in Fashion Marketing and Merchandising from ACC in May 2017. Kimberly is currently working on the visual team at Nordstrom in the Domain and pursuing a career in visual merchandising.

Katie S. Scallan is the Director, Marketing & Corporate Communications for The Friedkin Group where she oversees its marketing, corporate branding and communications and its portfolio of companies across the automotive, entertainment, luxury hospitality and golf industries.  These organizations include: Gulf States Toyota, Imperative Entertainment, Auberge Resorts Collection, Diamond Creek Golf Club and Congaree Golf Club.

Isabella Rose Taylor graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York in May 2017 with a degree in Fashion Marketing.  She recently collaborated with PBTeen for her first brand expansion into home decor. Isabella began showing her work at several fashion weeks, culminating at New York Fashion Week in 2014. Her line has been sold at a major national retailer (Nordstrom) and brands. She has captured the media’s attention with her creativity and entrepreneurship, including being named as one of Fast Company’s “100 Most Creative People in Business ”  and Latina’s “30 Under 30”.

Advisory Committee Statement of Purpose

Statement of Purpose and Advisory Committee Information

The purpose of the Marketing and Fashion Marketing department is to provide premier courses and degree plans that give students the practical, theoretical, and technical knowledge needed to be successful in the field of marketing. Our curriculum provides students with first-rate professional and workforce programs that result in employment in the public and private sectors. It is based on identified competencies, has a capstone experience, and strives to be socially responsible as well as addressing employer needs. We are committed to:

  • Providing students in the marketing degree plans the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance their marketing abilities that will enable them to seek employment in a marketing or fashion position.
  • Providing students in the transfer degree plan the knowledge and skills necessary for transfer and success at a baccalaureate degree granting institution.
  • Providing students in the workforce areas the knowledge and skills necessary for job enhancement.
  • Providing employers in our community a trained, technically competent, and diverse workforce.
  • Providing all students advising from a qualified, dedicated, and accessible faculty.

Our overall departmental mission is threefold: 1) to prepare students for entry-level employment in the rapidly expanding Marketing and Fashion industry, 2) to enable students to improve their job skills to promote career advancement and development 3) provide undergraduate courses to individuals who wish to transfer to complete a four year degree.

The department hires highly qualified professionals within our field of study and provides them the support they need. The department has relevant, up-to-date course materials and keeps text books current.  Course content complies with federal and state laws and regulations and local industry standards and includes recommendations from the Advisory Committee. SCANS competencies along with Master Syllabi are posted on the departmental website.

The Marketing and Fashion Marketing Advisory Committee is composed of recognized leaders in the field in ACC's service area. Members convene regularly to offer their combined expertise to influence the curriculum structure and instructional methods of the program.
