ACC To Host Debate Over Proposed Amendment Banning Same-Sex Marriages

A public debate on Proposition 2, a proposed amendment to the Texas Constitution banning same-sex marriages, highlights Austin Community College events this week celebrating Constitution Day.

The debate, titled “I Thee Wed,” is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, in the Main Auditorium, Room 201 of the ACC Rio Grande Campus at 1212 Rio Grande Street.

Texas State Rep. Warren Chisum, who authored the amendment also known as the “Texas Marriage Amendment,” and Anne Wynne, spokesperson for No Nonsense in November, a political action committee working to defeat the proposed amendment, will respond to questions and debate their opposing views on the issue.

Although Texas law already prohibits same-sex marriages, Proposition 2 would make an unprecedented change to the Texas Constitution, defining marriage as a bond solely between a man and a woman. If voters approve the proposition, Texas would join more than a dozen states that statutorily and constitutionally ban same-sex marriage; if the proposition is defeated, Texas would become the first state to reject such an amendment.

The debate is scheduled to last one hour. Free pizza will be provided from noon to 1 p.m., and attendees will have access to a variety of information from all sides of the issue. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

Constitution Day commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787.

In addition to serving as president of the Texas Conservative Coalition’s Research Institute, Chisum serves on the State Appropriations and Licensing and Administrative Procedures committees. Wynne, a Dallas native, earned her law degree at the University of Texas School of Law and specializes in civil litigation, including family law.

ACC offers associate degrees and certificates in more than 180 areas at six Central Texas campuses. ACC opens its doors each year to more than 65,000 credit and continuing education students who benefit from the college’s great faculty and staff. ACC is the eighth largest community college in the U.S., according to the U.S. Department of Education.
