ACC INSTRUCTOR RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS SCHOLAR AWARD

Dr. Kathryn Frost, Lecturer in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Austin Community College, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to teach at the University of Bucharest Romania during the 2004-2005 academic year.

Frost plans to aid the American Studies Department in Bucharest with their efforts to move from a literature-based program to one that includes more of the social sciences. “I feel I am in a unique position to offer students a more thorough understanding of American culture and values,” said Frost. “In 1997 when I undertook a cross-cultural study of values and aspirations–comparing post-communist Romanians with Americans, I relied heavily on my training in social psychology. Since then I have expanded my studies to include ideas from sociology, philosophy, and political theory.”

“ACC congratulates Dr. Frost on her selection as a Fulbright Scholar,” said Dr. Robert Aguero, ACC President. “Such an accomplishment brings honor to ACC and our students; most importantly, it recognizes Dr. Frost for her teaching excellence.”

Frost is one of approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad to some 140 countries through the Fulbright Scholar Program. Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program’s purpose is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries.

Recipients of Fulbright Scholar awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement and because they have demonstrated extraordinary leadership potential in their fields.
