It’s a Small World After All: NanoScholar Program Gives Interns a Shot at Being Tomorrow’s Tycoons of Tiny

Texas students now have an exciting opportunity to receive valuable hands-on training in one of science and technology’s fastest growing fields.

The Nanoelectronics Workforce Development Initiative is a multi-year program jointly developed by Austin Community College (ACC), SEMATECH, ATDF, and Texas State Technical College-Waco (TSTC) to train technicians and engineers in nanoelectronics.

Nanotechnology, which develops revolutionary products by engineering materials at the molecular level, is the foundation for emerging technologies that are expected to create more than two million jobs and generate trillions of dollars in the future. A significant nanotech segment is nanoelectronics, which the semiconductor industry has pioneered for nearly a decade.

The ACC NanoScholar Internship Program, funded by a $4 million grant from the State of Texas, will provide students with direct experience in nanofabrication infrastructure and R&D operations through hands-on work in ATDF, SEMATECH’s advanced technology R&D fab.

The NanoScholar program will initially train 160 students in nanoelectronics through paid internships, including:

* 80 15-week internships for two-year technical students
* 50 six-month internships for undergraduates
* 30 one-year internships for graduate students

The program will also reach 2,500 staff and faculty members from Texas educational institutions, as well as statewide business leaders, through onsite seminars and workshops in nanoelectronics. The result of the Nanoelectronics Workforce Development Initiative will be a ‘gold standard’ for preparing future generations for a career in nanoelectronics.
