Math Students Ace Competition

The Student Math League at Austin Community College placed first out of 19 Southwest colleges in the recent American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) competition.

Six students placed among the top 18 in the region, and the college finished 29th out of 181 community colleges nationally.

ACC’s Mathematics Department faculty donated $650 in award money, while the ACC Foundation donated $1,500 in matching funds and Holt, Rinehart and Winston chipped in $1,000. Prizes were awarded to the top eight students at ACC:

Darwin Natapradja, from Indonesia, is majoring in mechanical engineering and plans to transfer to The University of Texas-Austin.

Brian Tholen, a native Texan, plans to transfer to The University of Texas-Austin and major in mechanical engineering or physics.

Yosua Kristanto is also from Indonesia and plans to transfer to Purdue or Texas A&M University-College Station to study industrial engineering.

John Cruce is enrolled at ACC as part of the Early College Start program. He plans to transfer to Baylor University and major in theology.

Nick Wiz recently moved to Austin from Washington state. After he receives his associate degree in math from ACC, he plans to transfer to The University of Texas-Austin as an engineering major.

Michael Sustantyo, of Indonesia, received the second highest score in the spring contest. He plans to transfer to The University of Texas-Austin and major in petroleum engineering.

Sherly Teh received the highest score in this spring’s contest. Another Indonesia native, she plans to transfer to The University of Texas-Austin and major in chemical engineering.

Matthew Craig received the highest overall score for the year, and has been awarded a summer internship at Turner Collie and Braden. He will attend Texas A&M University-College Station and major in aerospace engineering.
