Teaching introduction makes career decision easier

Are you considering a teaching career? Now you can discover if education is right for you.

“Our teacher preparation classes can help you decide whether you want to be a teacher,” says Dr. Giao Phan, chair of Austin Community College’s new Education Instruction Department. “They also help you decide what age levels you may want to teach.”

Introduction to Teaching (EDUC 1301) provides close examination of the teaching profession, the teacher’s role in the classroom, and the skills needed to make a successful transition to the school setting. The experience includes guided, in-class observations at local elementary and secondary schools. Most important, these classroom observations are strictly hands-off.

“Our students don’t interact. They absorb and analyze the teaching as they’re observing,” Phan says. “Once you start interacting, you don’t see it the same way.”

“Introduction to Teaching is a great class because it gives you foresight to see if this is something you really want to do,” says student Dustin Kinas. “Without having this class, I probably would have gone in a different direction with my degree.”
