Youth ‘campers’ get ACC benefits

Summer Youth Programs

ACC has summer classes for kids to help exercise bodies and intellects.

Families who enroll in the Austin Community College District’s Youth Programs are able to enjoy the same benefits as college-age students: Low tuition, small classes, great instructors, and plenty of choices.

“There aren’t a lot of affordable options available to parents looking for quality activities for their children, especially older children,” says Sandra Gaskin, executive director of Continuing Education which coordinates many of the activities. “ACC Youth Programs is a service we love being able to provide the community.”

This summer, ACC Youth Programs offers activities that will have kids flocking to stages, lakes, golf courses, dance studios, computer labs, and classrooms. Among the activities, they can study kung fu, build websites and video games, prepare for college, or learn a job skill.

“Instead of sitting around for hours at home, these kids get to learn a new skill as they make new friends and stay active,” Gaskin says.

This year’s schedule includes returning favorites like the State Theatre acting camps and new additions such as beginning ballroom dance. “Camps take place at locations all around Austin, depending on the activity, and the instructors are qualified and enthusiastic,” Gaskin says.

Class sizes are kept small in order to accommodate participants’ age and the activity, so each student is engaged and learning, says Gaskin. “Youth Programs is an important component of the college’s mission because it helps us create a college-going culture that is critical to the region’s economy,” says Dr. Richard Armenta, associate vice president of student success. “Participants develop an appreciation of academics, a desire to succeed, and a drive to attend college and become a lifelong learner.”

Summer Youth Programs registration begins Thursday, March 20. Stop by ACC’s Highland Business Center, 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, or phone (512) 223.7542. Visit the ACC Youth Programs website for information on classes and fees.
