Immigration, Education, and Our Future! ACC hosted the “Immigration, Education, and Our Future” conference at St. Edward’s University on Friday, May 9. Educational leaders from Texas, Arizona, and Washington discussed issues affecting immigrant students and their families. During the conference, researchers unveiled two reports on immigrant high school and college students. ACC’s Center for Public Policy and Political Studies funded and facilitated the research that produced the findings. The reports provided conference attendees insight into the real challenges immigrant students face. ACC’s Latino/Latin American Studies Center initiated the conference, and the Office of Student Success oversaw the development of the project. The School of Education at St. Edward’s University co-sponsored the event.

Math Students

ACC team score equals first place. A team of students from Austin Community College earned first place in regional competition during this spring’s American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges Student Math League. In addition, three ACC students were among the top seven students in the region. Nationally, the team placed 19th out of 179 colleges. Students compete as individuals and as teams – at both the regional and national level. Each school has a team for each round; the team consists of the top five individual scores in each round regardless of how many students participate. This year, over 6,000 students from 179 community colleges across the nation participated. ACC award winners for spring 2008 were Arnaldo Cruz, Heekook Yang, Henry Wiltshire, Haowei Wang, Daniel Miller, Dustin Estetter, Benjamin Albot, and Zachary Wegner.

ACC One Card

What is this ACC OneCard thing? ACC students will soon receive an ACC OneCard in the mail. THIS IS NOT A CREDIT CARD! It is an ACC-approved method for students to receive refunds, financial aid, and loan payments from the college. ACC has contracted with a company called HigherOne to distribute funds to students. Students must activate the card (online) to receive payments from ACC and can choose three options for receiving payments: 1) Through an ACC OneCard account, 2) direct deposit to an existing bank account, or 3) a check mailed to the student’s address. Activating the card does NOT automatically open an ACC OneAccount. Visit www.austincc.edu/onecard for more information.

Learning through tutoring. The ACC Learning Labs will host their 11th annual Tutor Training Conference from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, June 6, at the Eastview Campus. Approximately 150 learning lab tutors will attend this year’s conference, titled “Training Talented Tutors: Making the Best Better.”

Is someone about to steal your car? Or take something from it? It’s not a huge problem at ACC campuses, but it does happen. Students, faculty, staff, and visitors can help protect their vehicles from auto theft and burglary at ACC and elsewhere by taking precautions that will make your vehicle less of a target: Take your keys – 20 percent of stolen vehicles had keys in them. Lock your car – half of stolen vehicles are left unlocked. Never leave your engine running unattended – it makes the vehicle an easy target and it’s against the law in Texas. Don’t leave valuables in plain view – it will help make your vehicle less of a desirable target.
