ESL Draws 500 People

They came from a variety of countries and speak over 40 languages, yet they have one thing in common – to learn English. About 500 people began lining up after midnight Tuesday to register for English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at Austin Community College.

“Our region is becoming more and more a destination for immigrants from around the world,” says Michael Midgley, vice president of workforce education and business development. “ACC is the primary source of ESL instruction in Central Texas.”

“ACC offers all levels of English instruction, from basic to advanced, to help these individuals adapt and succeed here,” Midgley says. “We want them in the workforce and succeeding.”

David Castro keeps busy with two jobs but still arrived at the ACC Highland Business Center by 3 a.m. Wednesday in order to register for ESL classes.

“I have a psychology degree from my country, but I want to get better in English,” says Castro. The Peru native wants to pursue a master’s degree here after he improves his English. “I want to work in clinical psychology, to help people,” he says.

“Many of our students already hold college degrees from other countries,” Midgley says. “In many cases they have knowledge and experience. They just need to improve their English. These classes help us tap into that labor force.”
