Diez y Seis dancers

ACC celebrates Mexican Independence Day. The Latino/Latin American Studies Center (El Centro) and the Center for Public Policy and Political Studies (CPPPS) will host the annual Diez y Seis de Septiembre celebration at the Riverside Campus on Tuesday, September 16, beginning at noon. The celebration will feature speeches from local historians, performances by mariachi and conjunto bands, dances by Roy Lozano’s famed Ballet Folklórico de Texas, and a special performance by ACC’s very own Boca Abajo. This hourlong show of culture and tradition will surely inspire, and it’s free! ACC faculty, staff, students, and community members are welcome to join the celebration. For more information please see events at the CPPPS website, or call (512) 223.7049.

I just want to celebrate. Student Life will be hosting Welcomepalooza at every campus during the first three weeks of classes. The event welcomes students and provides information to help them succeed and enjoy the semester. Welcomepalooza features music, food, displays, fun and more. Visit the Student Life website for dates and times.

You’ve got ACCmail. ACC is teaming up with Google Apps Education to provide personalized email accounts to all ACC students by September 15. It’s called ACCmail and will allow the college community to share information and ideas more easily. “Google Apps at ACC” is the name of ACC’s installation of the suite of online software applications that Google offers to educational institutions and nonprofit organizations. The package includes email, web-based word processing and spreadsheet programs, sharable calendars, chat, and more. And, it’s all free with no advertising and no spamming. Go to Google Apps Education Edition to learn more.

So it is written, so it shall be done. OK, he’s not Yul Brynner, but Dr. Kinslow will be presenting his State of the College address at the General Assembly on Friday, August 22, at the Hyatt Regency Austin. General Assembly begins with a continental breakfast at 8 a.m. The keynote speaker will be Rudy M. Garcia, dean of students at Central New Mexico Community College. He will be talking about Service Learning. For complete information about the assembly’s agenda, times, location, parking, and other details, visit the General Assembly website.

Capmetro WebsiteNew website helps Dump the Pump. ACC has created a website to help with alternative transportation options. With the costs of gas on a steady rise, growing environmental concerns, and the parking challenges students, staff and faculty face at several ACC campuses, public transportation provides an excellent alternative for commuting to and from campuses. Students can ride Capital Metro for an entire month for as low as $5, non-students as low as $10. ACC offers a one-stop resource at CapMetro to help commuters arrange their travel plans using Capital Metro services. You can access campus-to-campus and Capital Metro transit center-to-campus routes, as well as Park and Ride information directly from the ACC website. Schedules are subject to change so check back the Capital Metro site regularly for the most up-to-date schedules.

ACC Skill CenterBuild it and they will come. Our campuses are alive with growth and renovation. The Skill Center near the Rio Grande Campus is being demolished to make room for the new 450-plus space parking garage, the old Austin High School gymnasium is being renovated with new offices and classrooms, new parking lots have been completed at Cypress Creek and Pinnacle, the new Gaming Institute will be opening at Northridge this fall, and the plans for the new Round Rock campus will be unveiled in September with ground breaking scheduled for the spring.

The Skill Center.
