Welcomepalooza Celebrates Beginning of School Year

Austin Community College launched the 2008-09 academic year at the Cypress Creek Campus on Tuesday, August 26, with the first of seven Welcomepaloozas.

“Welcomepalooza is like a big block party we host for students at each campus,” said Student Life Director Cheryl Richard. “It’s a fun way to welcome students back to campus and introduce them to what we have to offer.”

Some students snacked on roasted corn and free ice cream during the two-hour event. Others climbed a rock wall, played video games, or sat for henna tattoos and caricature portraits.

“This is great!” said elementary education major Alicia Harris, who was getting a henna butterfly tattooed on her arm. “It’s a lot of fun, and I’ve met a lot of nice people.”

Vendors helped jump-start the event with snow cones, handcrafted jewelry, and a van full of energy drinks featuring a live DJ spinning tunes. Students said they were enjoying more than Welcomepalooza.

“This is my second day of class, and I really like it,” said Deena Barnes, an accounting major. “Everyone’s been really nice. My classes have been really hard but interesting.”

“The professors are nice and welcoming,” said David Weiss, who’s majoring in sports medicine. “They’re just real easy to talk to.”

Welcomepalooza is coming to the remaining ACC campuses between now and September 9. Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Here’s the upcoming schedule:
Northridge – August 27
Eastview – August 28
