Latino Connection provides critical links to students

Lined with flags from various Latin American countries, vibrant displays of artwork, and pleasant aromas from a delicious buffet, the Multipurpose Room of the Austin Community College Eastview Campus set the perfect stage for the third annual Hispanic Student Reception: Latino Connection.

On Wednesday, October 22, current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and families learned about the many valuable college resources available at ACC. The Student Support and Success Division hosted the event.

“Tonight’s turnout is great,” says Marisol Garza, student recruitment and advising specialist, and event chair. “We want all students to be aware of the tremendous support services they can utilize at ACC.”

During the reception students connected with college faculty, staff, and peers and had direct access to many of tools needed for a successful educational experience, such as, financial aid, advising, supplemental instruction, and Student Life organizations and clubs.

ACC also debuted the Transfer Academy, a new program to guide students through the university transfer process with in-depth involvement in curriculum planning, essay writing, and other workshops. Many students were able to register and receive more information about the program during the event.

Toward the end of the evening Eric Cruz, an English teacher at Austin High School and 2008 Teacher of the Year for Austin Independent School District, addressed the students and urged  them to strive for excellence and to never give up on learning.

The night also included a host of great giveaways and raffle prizes, including a semester of free books to one lucky student.

“ACC has so much to offer its students,” says Dr. Richard Armenta, student success associate vice president. “ACC is truly a great place to start, and it’s important that we continue to sponsor events and programs that speak to our Latino students.”
