ACC’s College Connection Gives Nixon-Smiley High School Students Taste of College

The Austin Community College District’s College Connection Program hosted a group of Nixon-Smiley High School juniors Tuesday, April 27, for a day of activities that connected students to their college and career goals.

“I want to be a track coach,” said Paul Saldana during a small college fair at ACC’s Highland Business Center. He was pleased to discover the Huston-Tillotson University representative he met at the fair serves as the HT men’s basketball coach.

“I’m a big fan of Austin, so I’m definitely considering ACC,” Saldana said.

The University of Texas, Texas State University in San Marcos, Southwestern University, and Concordia University also sent representatives to the fair to visit with the students and field questions.

Nixon-Smiley student Cheyenne Cisneros, who plans to study sports medicine, had the opportunity to talk to representatives from two of the schools that most interest her – ACC and Texas State.

“I may take my core classes at ACC and further my education at either Texas State or the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor,” she says.

The event also included a tour of ACC’s Riverside Campus. Students got a feel for campus life and learned about educational and workforce programs offered at ACC.

ACC’s College Connection is an award-winning program that brings ACC staff and resources into service area high schools, including Nixon-Smiley, to help seniors make confident and informed choices about their future. College Connection staff members assist each student with the process of applying to college, including filling out admissions applications, taking college placement tests, applying for financial aid, and making important decisions about degrees and schedules.
