Speakers Come to ACC for Black History Month

A judge and an astronaut are coming to Austin Community College in back-to-back events celebrating Black History Month.

Judge Gregory Evans and retired NASA astronaut Dr. Guy Bluford will visit ACC this month.

ACC welcomes Georgia judge and future medical student Gregory Evans on the evening of Tuesday, February 22, for a talk at Riverside Campus about overcoming obstacles. He will provide an account of his quest to enter medical school even while fighting stage IV cancer.

“At the end of the day, you can’t take ‘no’ for an answer,” says Evans. “I want students to not be their own biggest obstacle.”

The next day, February 23, retired NASA astronaut Guy Bluford – the first African-American in space – is at Eastview Campus to talk about setting ambitious goals and celebrating personal triumphs.

“When I speak with young audiences, I encourage them to aim high,” says Bluford. “This encourages them to set high goals, do their best, and to persist.”

Both events are free and open to the public. Sponsors are Phi Theta Kappa, ACC Student Government Association, ACC Men of Distinction, Austin Space Aces, Student Life, Student Services, and the Texas Association of Black Personnel in Higher Education.
