ACC Program Successfully Preparing Adults for College; Apply Now for Fall

The Austin Community College District’s program to prepare adults for college is celebrating one successful year, and the application period for this fall is under way.

The ACC Transitions Program is a free course for high school/GED graduates that breaks down common barriers to college achievement and builds essential academic skills for higher education. The goal is to give students the ability to successfully complete freshman-level courses as defined by the Texas Success Initiative (TSI), known as becoming “TSI-complete.”

“Without the Transitions Program, I am not sure if I would have continued my education after receiving my GED,” says Marcia Salazar, an ACC student. “The program has enabled me to look at college in a different light by giving me preparation before actually beginning the college process. I am extremely grateful to have been a part of such a great program.”

Transitions offers students intense preparation for college reading, writing, and math, along with proven study strategies. The program includes career counseling and assistance with applications for ACC admission and financial aid.

Among students who completed the program in fall 2010 and spring 2011, 85 percent became TSI-complete in at least one area (college reading, writing, and/or math). More than 50 percent became TSI-complete in all three areas.

Transitions pays for Texas Higher Education Assessment exam fees and textbooks; students who complete the program also receive a $100 stipend. Transitions students who go on to enroll in and complete an ACC credit course with a grade of C or better receive a $250 stipend and become eligible for a $1,000 ACC scholarship.

The next 10-week preparation course begins September 6. The class will meet Monday through Thursday, Â 5:45-9:30 p.m. at Eastview Campus (3401 Webberville Rd.). Students must be U.S. citizens 18 and older with a GED or high school diploma. Current and former developmental education students are encouraged to apply. Prospective students must undergo a short interview prior to enrolling and maintain a 75 percent attendance rate.

To sign up, visit austincc.edu/transitions or contact Charlene Gill, ACC Transitions coordinator ([email protected], 223.5122). The application deadline is 5 p.m. Monday, August 22.

Transitions is funded through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
