President Kinslow Presents State of the College Report

ACC President/CEO Dr. Stephen B. Kinslow presented a “State of the College” report during the August Board of Trustees meeting and the ACC General Assembly on August 19. After thanking the board, faculty, and staff for their support during his term as president, Dr. Kinslow outlined successes and challenges facing ACC.

“ACC has a very solid, very positive community reputation, and that was not the case six years ago. I think that is an extremely significant change for our institution,” said Dr. Kinslow. “We are on the map … in the state of Texas and even nationally.”

Dr. Kinslow noted the college has experienced internal improvements as well and praised the college’s strong faculty and staff. “I think the internal culture of the college has changed for the better,” he said. “It’s very healthy.”

Successes highlighted by Dr. Kinslow include:

• Board’s commitment to and practice of policy governance
• Integrated Master Plan/budget model
• Student Success Initiative
• i am acc campaign
• Annexations and land banking
• Model P-16 initiatives such as College Connection and Early College Start
• Strong public support/good reputation

Challenges noted in the report include:

• Continued decline in state funding
• Continued high growth and demand for more programs and services
• Need to balance tuition increases with growth and success strategies
• Future implementation of incentive state funding
• Enhancing public understanding of community college mission and return on investment
• Significant redesign of Developmental Education
