(Austin, Texas) – The Austin Community College District will partner with the Elgin community to host a groundbreaking celebration for the new ACC Elgin Campus on November 15th at 10 a.m., 1501 U.S. Highway 290.

“This will be ACC’s 9th comprehensive campus and the first for Bastrop County,” said Dr. Steve Kinslow, ACC president/CEO. “The campus will bring programs designed to support Elgin’s plans for economic development and will increase access to higher education and workforce training for residents— fundamental to building a stronger middle class.”

Elgin ISD residents approved annexation last fall, becoming eligible for ACC’s in-district tuition rate and paving the way for a new full-service college campus. Campus features include a three-story brick-and-curtain wall structure of approximately 65,000 square feet, a library, student support services, testing center, and a computer lab. The first phase is expected to accommodate up to 1,500 students and will offer core curriculum/academic transfer courses, agriculture-related studies, graphic design, visual communication and digital media programs, applied technologies, and more.

“This is the biggest thing to happen in Elgin that I can recall since moving here in 1957,” said Dr. Charles “Doc” Graham, founder and owner of Southwest Stallion Station and member of the ACC Elgin Campus External Steering Committee.

ACC purchased 98 acres on U.S. Highway 290 and County Line Road, near Elgin High School. The college was able to take advantage of time-sensitive Build America Bonds. Under the program the federal government funds 35-percent of the interest costs which is approximately $14.9 million.

ACC opened the Elgin Center in spring 2011 where it will continue to offer classes each semester until the new ACC Elgin Campus opens in fall 2013. The ACC Board of Trustees selected O’Connell Robertson as the architect and Skanska USA Building as the construction manager at risk. Â Learn more at austincc.edu/elgin.
