New Committees Keep Campuses Safe & Secure

Safety begins at home, as they say, or on campus thanks to a group of staff members dedicated to keeping ACC safe and accident-free.

Volunteers work to keep campuses safe.

Campus Safety Committees will be launching in October at the South Austin and Cypress Creek campuses. Committees will be added at other campuses next year.

“The unspoken conviction of our families is that they want us to do everything possible so that those they care about come home safely every day,” says Robert Aquadro, Environmental Health, Safety & Insurance Coordinator.” To achieve the student success goals the college has set forth, we have to begin with a safe environment.”

The effort is part of an “Injury Free ACC” campaign and a comprehensive Injury and Illness Prevention program. Through the shared governance process, the EHS committee has united Campus Managers, Science Safety Coordinators, functional leaders, employee association leaders, and Student Government Association representatives to champion safety at ACC.

“ACC has made tremendous strides in the past decade establishing an environmental, health, and safety management system that is one of the best that any community college has to offer,” Aquadro adds.

“The unspoken conviction of our families is that they want us to do everything possible so that those they care about come home safely every day.”

The new committees will include campus managers, representatives from Emergency Response Teams, campus police, maintenance, and EHS personnel — in other words, Aquadro says — anyone who is passionate about safety. The committees will conduct safety inspections, follow-up on safety-related suggestions, review accidents, and communicate best practices regarding safety.

“These committees will help students learn crucial safety skills that will be a tangible advantage in their future careers,” Aquadro says. Committee members will be trained in safety leadership and recognizing hazards, and will receive professional development credit.

Anyone interested in participating on a Campus Safety Committee should contact Linda Haywood, (CYP), at 223-2002, or Betsy Erwin, (SAC), at 223-9106, or the campus manager at each campus. To learn more about ACC’s commitment to safety, visit the Environmental Health Safety & Insurance website.
