Emergency Preparedness Week Begins Jan. 30

ACC is bringing emergency awareness to the forefront with Emergency Preparedness Week January 30 to February 3. The goal is to educate students, faculty, and staff about the best actions to take if an emergency occurs on campus.

“Having a weeklong discussion about emergency preparedness is an effective way to drive the preparedness message to the ACC community,” says Rebecca Cole, executive director of the Environmental, Health, Safety, and Insurance Department, which directs emergency planning for the college.

During Emergency Preparedness Week, campuses and departments have an opportunity to test emergency response plans and evacuation procedures. The college also will have an information campaign to teach students and employees about their roles in a campus emergency and how to protect their own health and safety. ACC Police will sponsor crime prevention and armed intruder seminars.

Students, faculty, and staff are urged to register with the ACC Emergency Alert System. Emergency Alerts can be lifesaving in a disaster, but you must add a cellphone number to receive text messages or voicemail alerts. Log in to Online Services to complete this process now.

ACC Emergency Alerts can put important information in the palm of your hand,” says Kristine Elderkin, ACC’s emergency management coordinator. “We encourage you to sign up now because it will be too late if disaster strikes.”

Emergency Preparedness Week is held each semester to provide incoming students with important emergency information and Emergency Alert signup procedures.
