March 31 Forum Connects Students and Community with Social Media Experts

As social media channels continue to change the communications landscape, ACC’s Business and Technical Communications Program is hosting a Social Media Communications Forum at Eastview Campus (3401 Webberville Rd.). The event, which runs noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, will bring together students, faculty, social media experts, and local employers. The forum is free and open to ACC students and faculty as well as business owners who want to expand their social media presence.Â

“For years, Austin has been known as the live music capital of the world, and now it’s becoming known as a major hub of new media development,” says Jill Brockmann, adjunct associate professor of business and technical communications at ACC. “This forum is a great way for students to learn social media skills that are in demand.”

Keynote speakers include ACC alumna Shama Hyder Kabani, an author and owner of a Dallas-based marketing firm, who was named among the “Top 25 Under 25 Entrepreneurs in North America” by Business Week magazine; Anne Gentle, an author recognized by MindTouch as one of the top ten technical communication influencers in 2011; and Leslie Hancock, communications consultant and ACC faculty member.

The forum gives attendees an opportunity to learn about ACC’s new social media communication classes, part of the Business and Technical Communications Program. The event also will include networking with social media-oriented companies, panel discussions, and presentations.

“We keep hiring, but we often face a lack of skilled individuals,” says Kabani. “I feel there will be a huge rise in demand for ‘community managers,’ people who know how to manage, engage, and grow a brand online.”

Many companies that specialize in social media management and online community building are moving to Austin, says Brockmann.

“In order to stand out when applying for a social media-related job, it’s a good idea to stay current on the latest trends and methods of measuring social media strategy successes,” notes Brockmann. “This forum and our social media classes give students experience and knowledge that is extremely desirable in the modern communications field.”

The event will be held in the Multipurpose Hall (Room 8500). Seating is limited, and those wishing to attend must RSVP online. For more information, visit austincc.edu/tcm.
