ACC Faculty, Administrators to Share Insights at Upcoming NISOD Conference

A number of Austin Community College administrators and faculty members will be presenting at the NISOD International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence, May 27-30 at the Austin Convention Center.

NISOD (National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development) provides professional development opportunities to higher education faculty, administrators, and staff. The organization’s 700-plus community college members include almost every large community college district in the United States and more than 200 small colleges from around the world. NISOD also is the outreach and service arm of the Community College Leadership Program at the University of Texas at Austin.

ACC is a sponsor of this year’s conference, which will include the following presentations by members of the ACC community:

“A Dialogue on the Good, Bad, and the Unexpected of the Completion Agenda in Community Colleges” — panel discussion including Dr. Richard Rhodes, President/CEO.

“Debunking Traditional Organizational and Institutional Boundaries,” Hazel Ward, dean of communications, and Virginia Fraire, dean of student services, Riverside Campus.

“Spelling Success for All Students: The SI Strategy,” Mary Gilmer, Supplemental Instruction supervisor, and Richard Armenta, associate vice president for student success.

“Increasing Male Minority Student Engagement,” Sharon Sarles, adjunct associate professor of sociology.

“Give Us Our Daily Data: Creating a Culture of Evidence”– roundtable including Linda Welsh, chair, Child Care and Development.

“I Am Going to Call My Attorney,” Eileen Klein, executive dean of health sciences, and Pat Recek, assistant dean of health sciences.

“Educating Global Thinkers and Citizen Leaders,” Shirin Khosropour, professor of psychology, and Charlotte Gullick, professor of creative writing.

“Integrating Adult Basic Education into the Community College,” David Borden, executive director of adult education.

In addition, ACC’s Dixieland band, “The Numbers,” and Denise Stewart, a featured performer with ACC’s Jazz Band, will perform at the conference.
