Austin Community College will host a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday, March 27, to mark the beginning of ACC’s renovation of Highland Mall.
The event takes place 10-11:30 a.m. at Highland Mall (6001 Airport Blvd.), outside the former J.C. Penney store. There will be refreshments from Highland-area vendors and live music.
RSVP for ACC Highland Groundbreaking: 223.7595 or [email protected].
The event is open to the college and community; please RSVP by calling (512) 223.7595 or emailing [email protected] by Friday, March 22. The event will be live-streamed at austincc.edu/highland.
“ACC Highland will be a state-of-the-art learning environment and a center for expanding our partnerships in the community,” says Dr. Richard Rhodes, ACC president/CEO. “This facility will serve and benefit the entire region, and we’re excited to get started on the renovation.”
ACC began acquiring property at Highland Mall in 2010 and purchased the final component in 2012. The college’s long-term plan calls for transforming the Highland Mall site into a modern educational space and center for community and business partnerships.
The first renovation is the former J.C. Penney store, which will be used for instruction, with space dedicated to innovative learning concepts that create momentum for students to persist and complete. In particular, the Penney space will house the college’s math emporium, an open-lab model that allows students to move through developmental math curriculum at an individualized pace. It is expected to open for the fall 2014 semester.
