World Renowned Choreographer Meryl Tankard Hosts Master Class for ACC Dance Students

Australian choreographer Meryl Tankard, known internationally for her work including the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games opening ceremony, led a master class with ACC dance students Friday, April 5.

“I do enjoy teaching; it’s always different. I never know exactly what we’ll do until we meet the students,” says Tankard. “I like to work with a few improvisations to give students an idea of how I create my work.”

Tankard is touring the United States with her latest work, “The Oracle.” Through partnership with Texas Performing Arts, ACC students participated in a master class with the artist.

“To have an international artist of her stature work with our students was amazing,” says Darla Johnson, founder of ACC’s Dance Department. “She and her partner shared their expertise and provided a rare workshop experience.”

Tankard has held similar classes at Syracuse and Princeton universities and in Chicago and Denver.

“It was a great experience,” says dance student Heather Bullock-Porter. “She brought out a side of myself I’m not used to expressing. It was a challenge, really made me think.”

“Our students did an amazing job in the master class and represented ACC and Austin very well,” Johnson says.
