Elgin Campus Countdown: Get a Sneak Peek at June 1 College Fair

Elgin is a growing community known for bricks, barbecue, and come August 2013, Bastrop County’s first college campus. ACC officially opens the Elgin Campus for fall classes, but the public will get a one-day only sneak peak during the ACC Elgin College Fair and Elgin Chamber Business Expo on Saturday, June 1.

“This is a great opportunity for residents from Elgin, Manor, Bastrop, and beyond to experience this beautiful new campus,” said Campus Manager Betsy Erwin. “Our instructional programs and student services folks will be there to showcase a wide range of offerings.”

In addition to transferable general education/core curriculum courses, ACC’s ninth campus will be home to a new sustainable agriculture entrepreneurship program. A veterinary technician degree program is being developed with a goal of offering vet tech classes in spring 2014.

“Elgin will have a broad array of general education programs, including social and behavioral sciences, math, natural science, and biology, ” said Mike Midgley, ACC vice president of instruction. “We’ll also offer programs in fields such as creative digital media and business.”

The campus has an open design with a central atrium and plenty of windows for enjoying the view.

The Sustainable Agriculture Entrepreneurship Program at the new campus will serve as an incubator for agriculture entrepreneurs, teaching students both how to cultivate crops and bring their products to market.

“Students who graduate from the program will have access to a parcel of land for up to a year to help get their business going,” Midgley says, adding that the model for the program can be expanded to other types of agriculture and other ACC communities.

While the Sustainable Agriculture Entrepreneurship Program starts with a one-year CE certification, plans are to work toward a credit program and eventually transfer agreements with Texas A&M and Texas State University.

The college fair will showcase a variety of programs with demonstrations and offer early registration for Elgin classes. A highlight of the event will be a first look at the campus.

“The furniture is moving in, computers are in queue, and we’re working around the clock to get the facility ready for June 1,” said Pamela Collier, Elgin Campus project manager. “I think this is ACC’s most beautiful campus yet, and the community is going to love it.”

The ACC Elgin College Fair and Elgin Chamber Business Expo will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you would like to showcase your program or attend the event, contact Dahlia Anzaldua-Torres.
