Workshop Helps Foster Care Alumni Get Jump Start on College

Austin Community College is hosting a free workshop to help foster care alumni get ready for college. The Jump Start

Orientation will be held July 24-26 at ACC’s Highland Business Center (5930 Middle Fiskville Rd., Room 221).

College staff will help participants understand what to expect in college and share information on financial aid, tips for success, and other important topics. Attendees will be able to register for classes as well as meet with faculty and other foster care alumni. There also will be tours of ACC’s Round Rock, Northridge, and Eastview campuses.

“This is the first experience with college for many foster care alumni,” says Loretta Edelen, director of community outreach at ACC. “Students who go through the foster care system benefit from additional support in order to successfully transition into college.”

At ACC, that extends beyond the Jump Start Orientation. The Foster Care Alumni Program connects enrolled students with “campus champions,” who provide guidance and support.
