Austin Community College’s Center for Public Policy and Political Studies will host Luci Baines Johnson, daughter of President Lyndon B. Johnson, at its annual fundraiser luncheon on May 7.

Luci Baines Johnson

Johnson is founder and limited partner of LBJ Family Wealth Advisors and serves as a board member for organizations including the LBJ Foundation and Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. In her keynote address, she will speak about President Johnson’s commitment to higher education for all.

“I am so proud to address the Center for Public Policy and Political Studies at ACC and to applaud its pursuit of knowledge about the role of public policy and political studies in American life,” says Johnson. “Daddy felt education was the ultimate civil rights act because without a chance to get the best education a person can absorb, one doesn’t stand a chance to fulfill their true potential. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, let us remember its import in opening all the doors of opportunity for our people to public accommodations, including the best of our institutions of learning.”

Johnson will be introduced by Christy Carpenter, the daughter of Liz Carpenter, who served as Lady Bird Johnson’s staff director and press secretary.

“This event is a great way to advocate for the Center for Public Policy and Political Studies and to network with others who share our commitment to educating civically engaged individuals,” says Peck Young, CPPPS director. “Every net dollar raised will support CPPPS and our students.”

CPPPS, the nation’s first nonprofit public policy studies center at a community college, encourages political and civic engagement through programs, internships, and conferences.

The luncheon will be at the Hilton Austin (500 E. 4th St.), noon to 1 p.m. To purchase fundraiser tickets or for more information,
