“El Centro” Recognizes First Scholarship Graduates

AUSTIN, Texas (May 5, 2014) – El Centro, Austin Community College’s Latino/Latin American Studies Center, is proud to announce the graduation of its first group of scholarship graduates.

Eleven Hispanic scholars have completed two years at ACC through a grant from the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. Students now plan to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a bachelor’s degree. El Centro will recognize the students during an award ceremony 6 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at South Austin Campus (1820 W. Stassney Ln., Room 1130).

This year’s Hispanic scholars are Sabrina Marie Barrera, Karem Yareth Castillo, Bryant Garcia, Jasmin Araceli Jimenez, Wolguins Vital, Vanessa C. Santos, Rosa Karina Villarreal, Emilio Monreal Mendoza, Sandra Guadalupe Perez, Guillermina Martinez, and Maria Aguilar.

Scholars plan to transfer to Texas State University, Southwestern University, Huston-Tillotson University, and Texas A&M University.

“This is a wonderful milestone for both these students and El Centro,” says Dr. Mariano Díaz-Miranda, director of El Centro. “We are proud of our scholars’ accomplishments and know they will have great success as they take the next step in their education. They are setting a great example for the Hispanic scholars who follow.”

In fall 2013, ACC enrolled 12,131 Hispanic credit students, nearly 30 percent of the student body. The college is certified as a Hispanic Serving Institution, a federal designation indicating the college maintains 25 percent or greater full-time equivalent Hispanic enrollment.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is a not-for-profit organization supporting Hispanic American higher education. For more information, visit hsf.net or contact [email protected].
