Learning community pairs developmental writing, speech classes

Want to improve your writing skills and public speaking ability at the same time? This fall, ACC is offering a new opportunity for students to complete their developmental writing requirements while taking a college-level speech course.

The program pairs Writing Skills III (DEVW 0330) and Public Speaking (SPCH 1315). The courses will be connected and are designed to increase skills in both areas.

“Writing well and presenting well are definitely connected,” says Professor Mark Butland of the Speech Department. “What students learn here will help them in future classes and in their careers – no matter what field they pursue.”

Writing Skills III will teach students all aspects of writing, including grammar, punctuation, and how to format an essay. The essays from Writing Skills III will be the basis for some of the speeches in Public Speaking, which will help students organize ideas and give confident presentations.

The courses are offered back-to-back Mondays and Wednesdays this fall, with Public Speaking held from 3 to 4:20 p.m. and Writing Skills III held from 4:30 to 5:50 p.m. at Northridge Campus.
