Bidding underway for ACC student-built tiny house

Bidding ends today on a tiny house designed and built by Austin Community College students and local businesses in partnership with the Home Builders Association of Greater Austin.

The 288-square-foot house features sustainable designs developed by ACC students enrolled in the Building Construction Technology Program at ACC Round Rock Campus. Framers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and other skilled contractors worked with the students to see the project to completion.

“The construction landscape is changing. Programs and projects like this one with ACC ensure a highly-skilled workforce for the future,” says Miki Cook, chair of the HBA Education committee. “This home is the result of many partners coming together to create a home that’s nothing shy of state-of-the-art in high-performance construction that will provide low-maintenance and efficiency benefits for years to come.”

Bidding on eBay for the home started at $37,800, with a “buy-it-now” price of $49,800. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will go toward an endowment set up by the HBA to support green building construction technologies at ACC. The remainder will be used to support HBA’s education programs.

Partners in the project include Barley | Pfeiffer Architecture, which provided the architectural design and drafting services, and BASF, which provided seed money for the project. Several Austin-area businesses donated materials and services for the project. They include: Ferguson Enterprises, Kidd Roofing, PSW Real Estate, Spring Builders, BMC Building Materials, McCoy’s Building Supply, David Weekley Homes, Stan’s Heating and Air Conditioning, Casa Plumbing, Sappington Construction, In-Charge Electric, TreeHouse, Executive Cabinetry, Dupont Tyvek/Weatherization Partners, MLAW Engineering, Legend Lighting, Tri-Supply, ProSource, Architectural Tile & Stone, Robert Madden Industries, BLS Painting and Valspar, TexTruss, Circle RB Drywall, Buffalo Framing, and Mary Dewalt Design Group.
