ACC welding students place in state championship

Two ACC welding students are recognized among the top 2 percent in the nation after earning awards at The SkillsUSA Championships welding competition on Friday, March 20, in Waco.

August Brauer and Sarah Stork were awarded first place for individual welding and welded steel sculpture, respectively.

Competitors received contest drawings and a set of welding procedure specifications. They were tested on various aspects of welding and judged based on accuracy and quality.

Brauer and Stork are among six ACC students who earned medals at the state competition.

Other winners include Robert Feller, Chris Smith, and Anthony Urbanovsky, who together placed second for team fabrication. Additionally, Kevin Wilcox  placed second for individual welding and Robert Feller placed second for welded steel sculpture.

“These competitions showcase the best career and technical students in the nation,” says Brandon Whatley, department chair and professor of the ACC Welding Technology Department. “Our students worked hard to earn their recognitions. Our faculty stood with them through it all, devoting a great deal of time and energy for the benefit of our students.”

Brauer and Stork will move ahead to the national championship which is scheduled for June 22 in Louisville, KY.
