ACC hosts second annual Fairway 5K benefiting student scholarships

Austin Community College invites the community to lace up their running shoes to help support ACC students at the second annual ACC Fairway 5K Cross Country Run & Walk on Sunday, March 6, from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Riverside Golf Course (1020 Grove Blvd.).

Participants may run or walk the timed 5K route, which passes through the greens and crosses over grass, mud, trails, and cart paths.

“It’s a unique opportunity to experience the historic golf course like never before,” says Guadalupe Mendoza, ACC race director. “With the course’s rugged and uneven terrain, it’s a fun challenge and promotes health and physical fitness in our community.”

Proceeds from race registration benefit student scholarships and are matched in portion by the ACC Foundation, a nonprofit organization at the college supporting college programs and scholarships. The first annual ACC Fairway 5K raised more than $3,000.

“For many of our students, paying for classes is one of the toughest barriers to overcome,” says Dr. Virginia Fraire, ACC vice president of student services. “This race is a fun way we can ease that burden through scholarships, ultimately helping more students find success.”

The Fairway 5K is part of the Run Austin® Project 5K Spring Series and is sponsored by Run Austin, Luke’s Locker, Conley Sports, the Riverside Golf Course, ACC Student Life, the ACC Foundation, and ACC Access Employee Wellness.

Registration is open through Monday, February 29. Late registration is open through Saturday, March 6. Participants also may sign up on-site race day. For more details and to register, visit austincc.edu/fairway5k.
