Girl Scout Woman of Distinction

Vice President of Human Resources Gerry Tucker has been selected as one of five Women of Distinction by Girl Scouts of Central Texas. The honor recognizes outstanding women in the community who are role models for girls and adults. Previous honorees include former State Rep. Wilhelmina Delco, philanthropist Luci Baines Johnson, and ACC Trustee Gigi Edwards Bryant. Tucker and other 2017 recipients will be honored at an April luncheon.

Inspiring students

Physiology Professor Margaret Flemming is spotlighted in a Pearson Education video series about inspiring educators. The video features one of Flemming’s students describing the impact instructors have beyond the classroom. Watch the video.

Award-winning poet

English Associate Professor W. Joe Hoppe was named “Best Mopar Poet” by Austin Chronicle critics in the newspaper’s 2016 Best of Austin awards (Arts and Entertainment category) announced in November. The recognition is described as “what you get when you mix a card-carrying Mopar Muscle Cars of Austin member with a poet.“ Hoppe, a Michener Center for Writers fellow, has taught at ACC since 1996.

On stage

Marketing Copywriter Jason Newman in December performed the lead role in the Austin Playhouse production of “Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery.” Newman and his four castmates juggled more than 40 roles.

On Spotify

New music by Social Media Assistant Victor Hankins (who performs under the name Victor Grant), is available through victorgrantmusic.com or Spotify. The single “Got it Bad” is available in advance of the March 24 release of his debut EP, “Out of the Dark.”

Sharing expertise

Dr. Linnea Fletcher, chair of the Biotechnology Department, in January presented “Creating Life Long Educational Pathways in Biotechnology and Related Fields” at Texas State University as part its Biology Department Spring Seminar Series.

Dr. Virginia Fraire, vice president of student services, presented “Initiative Impact Analysis to Prioritize Action and Resource Allocation” at the annual EDUCAUSE conference in October.

Dr. Rodney Rohde, adjunct professor of biology, in November presented a TEDx talk at Texas State University about the importance of medical laboratory technicians and hygiene specialists in fighting antibiotic-resistant infections. The presentation subsequently was commended in a webpost by UMF Corp., a developer of infection prevention products. View the presentation.
