ACC hosts 11th Annual Día de la Familia

Austin Community College (ACC) invites families to the 11th annual Día de la Familia festival on Saturday, April 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Riverside Campus (1020 Grove Blvd.).

The bilingual event celebrates the entire community and provides important resources and information about ACC. College staff will be present to answer questions about the enrollment process, financial aid, and adult education, including the ESL/ESOL and GED programs. Los Texas Wranglers, the McCallum High School Ballet Folklorico, and the Ortega Elementary School Superstar Choir will provide entertainment. There also will be children’s activities including a special visit by Tony Maxironi, the balloon-twisting Texas Clown. Refreshments are provided.

“Día de la Familia is an interactive, family-friendly event that connects the community to ACC” says Dr.  Mariano Diaz-Miranda, founder/director of the Latino/Latin American Studies Center or El Centro. “At the event, ACC presents programs that help prepare future students with workforce skills needed to succeed in life while embracing the culture and traditions of the surrounding neighborhoods.”

Día de la Familia is part of the college’s ongoing efforts to reach the growing number of Hispanic families in Central Texas and build a college-going culture. In fall 2016, ACC enrolled 14,840 Hispanic credit students, 36 percent of the credit student body (a 4 percent increase from fall 2015). The college is certified as a Hispanic Serving Institution, a federal designation indicating the college maintains 25 percent or greater full-time equivalent Hispanic enrollment.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Latino/Latin American Studies Center at 512-223-6360 or email Yolanda Sánchez at [email protected].
