Austin Community College is introducing its first Riverbat Ambassadors, a team of students dedicated to helping current and prospective members of the ACC community start strong and make the most of their college experience.

The ambassadors will welcome students at Area of Study Information Sessions, Student Life programs, and other collegewide events. They’ll also participate in marketing programs and become experts in all things ACC.

“The ultimate goal is to promote student engagement,” says Student Life Coordinator Liz Morris, who oversees the ambassadors with Student Life Coordinator Mauri Winters. Because ambassadors represent areas of study rather than campuses, they’ll be able to help new students find organizations and activities that match their majors and interests.

Student ambassador Najala Shabazz, a general studies major who plans a career in human resources, says she likes the idea of helping others by sharing what she’s learned through experience.

“Students really like to hear other students’ perspectives on things,” she says.

Student Life plans to hire 24 ambassadors, who must be current students with a minimum 2.5 GPA. They may remain in the role as long as they meet the requirements; however, Morris expects ambassadors to continually rotate as students graduate and transfer.
