ACC accounting alumnus ranks top in nation

Austin Community College (ACC) accounting graduate Joe Mader was named a Top CPA Exam performer by the American Institute of CPAs and was granted the prestigious 2016 Elijah Watt Sells Award. The recognition is presented to candidates who score above 95.50 across the four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination on their first attempt.

“I would not be where I am today without the amazing accounting program at ACC,” says Mader. “The professors were very knowledgeable and really took the time to get to know their students and encourage them to understand the material and be successful.”

Out of 102,323 exam takers in 2016, only 58 candidates met the criteria to receive the award. The achievement allows Mader to progress through the ranks in the field of accounting and finance.

“The CPA exam has a reputation for being quite difficult and just passing is an achievement,” says Mader. “It feels great to have a tangible recognition of all the hours I spent studying. I know I couldn’t have done it without the support from my teachers and family.”

Mader graduated from ACC fall of 2014 with the Professional Accountant Advanced Technical Certificate and currently works as a senior auditor for the Office of Inspector General at Texas Health & Human Services.
