ACC awarded national grant to train retail workforce

Area retail workers can now advance their careers by completing a career-boosting industry certificate at Austin Community College, due to a $2.9 million grant from the League of Innovation for Community Colleges.

The award, part of the League’s Walmart Brighter Futures 3.0 Project, allows the college to begin offering classes that lead to the Retail Management Certificate, nationally recognized by the retail industry. ACC is one of only 12 community colleges selected nationwide to receive grant funding for the project.

“The Walmart Brighter Futures 3.0 Project will lead to best practices that will expand the capacity of community colleges to enhance job training opportunities for incumbent workers,” says Dr. Rufus Glasper, League president and CEO. “The League will be delighted to share the work of the participating colleges with colleges around the country.”

ACC classes begin March 20 for the first 8-week course in the certificate. Scholarship opportunities are available. Visit austincc.edu/apply to learn how to become an ACC student.

“This certificate opportunity will be a catalyst in providing a career and educational pathway for retail workers who want to move up to leadership roles,” says Donny Hurwitz, chair of ACC’s Management Department, which is offering the certificate. “We are working with area retailers to train and educate their current staff.”
