ACC celebrates Mujeres Emprendedoras graduation

Leadership program teaches women business skills to build earning potential

Austin Community College will host the second annual graduation ceremony for Mujeres Emprendedoras, a women’s entrepreneurship and leadership program, noon Saturday, July 1, at the Highland Business Center, Room 201 (5930 Middle Fiskville Rd.).

This year’s graduating class includes several mothers of students attending the Texas ACE/21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) and represents a new opportunity to empower community members of all ages through education.

“I am proud of my mom because, not only is she working hard to start her business, she is also learning new things,” says Destiny, a 21st CCLC student at San Juan Diego High School. “The class has helped my mom start her business and has helped other moms from the San Juan Diego High School community.”

“Including this type of workforce training for adults has been a challenge to implement but the parents of the children in these needy schools are on their way to a brighter future,” says Nancy Laudenslager, ACC Continuing Education director of Workforce Development. “This is sure to be a valuable milestone in their life and families. Furthermore, it is truly a value to the entire community.”

The 21st CCLC program seeks to educate and empower lower socioeconomic youth through programs that allow them to earn diplomas, learn marketable workforce skills, and become college-ready. Similarly, the Mujeres Emprendedoras program was created to give adult, Spanish-speaking women the opportunity to learn skills to advance their workforce prospects and earning potential.

Offered through ACC’s Continuing Education Division, the program is taught in Spanish and boasts a near 100-percent graduation rate. Graduates have gone on to own a translator and interpreting company, a green cleaning service, a media magazine, a gift shop, a gardening company, businesses for beauty services, and a house cleaning businesses employing more than 20 employees.
