ACC celebrates spring graduates at commencement

The Austin Community College District (ACC) will celebrate its spring graduates during commencement at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 12, at the Frank Erwin Center (1701 Red River St.).

The ceremony honors students who have completed ACC’s associate degree and certificate programs for the spring semester. More than 1,600 students are candidates and invited to walk at commencement.

“It’s incredible to see the pride in their faces,” says Dr. Richard Rhodes, ACC president and CEO. “Our students come to ACC with a dream to do more. Now, we celebrate as they turn opportunity into reality.”

The college will recognize eight students from the first cohort of the ACC Veterinary Technology Program who will graduate with an Associate of Applied Science degree. The commencement ceremony also will include a tribute to graduating veterans who will receive a medallion in appreciation of their service and a stand of acknowledgment during the ceremony.

Chief Art Acevedo of the Austin Police Department (APD) will deliver the keynote address. The first Hispanic to lead the APD, he has forged partnerships with elected officials, community organizations, and youth groups and views securing the future of young people as a moral and national imperative.

“Education is key to ensuring our kids don’t fall through the cracks,” says Chief Acevedo. “Any time we can help young people, I think it’s the patriotic thing to do.”
