ACC collecting children’s books for Brown Santa program

Austin Community College (ACC) is collecting donations for its annual “I Can Read!” children’s book drive benefiting the Travis County Sheriff’s Office Brown Santa program.

“We have a responsibility to help those who are less fortunate and close the inequality gap,” says Alfonso Pena, ACC Student Government Association (SGA) president. “With each book we donate, we deliver fundamental reading skills. We inspire creativity and curiosity among our youth.”

Sponsored by SGA, the drive benefits children of low-income families. Since its launch in 2009, the annual event has collected more than 19,000 books for the Brown Santa program.

Donations may be dropped off through Tuesday, December 6, at collection boxes located at ACC police offices on all campuses. New and gently used books are accepted. Monetary donations also are accepted by mail to the Highland Campus, SGA Office, Room 2350 (6101 Airport Blvd., Austin TX 78752) or online through Book Spring. To donate online, visit the Book Spring website and include the note “ACC Brown Santa.”

The books will be presented to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday, December 13, at Highland Campus.
