AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Community College is breaking ground on Tuesday at 10 a.m. for a project to expand the Elgin campus.

The project includes a building with new classrooms, a surgical clinic and a place to house small animals for students of the Veterinary Technology program. The school is also constructing a 11,000-square-foot new outbuilding for Sustainable Agricultural Entrepreneurship students. There will also be a new processing kitchen for the food grown on the campus’ working farm.

This is a part of phase II for the Elgin Campus adding 18,500-square-feet to the college. The new facilities will open in spring 2018.

“Since opening three years ago the ACC Elgin Campus has been a focal point for our community,” says Elgin Mayor Chris Cannon. “From early college high school classes to continuing education programs, the college represents opportunity for our residents. We’re excited to be a part of its growth.”

The campus improvements are a part of the 2014 bond election which allotted money for capital improvement projects. You can monitor updates on those projects here.
