ACC hosts poetry discussion and scholarship contest

Austin Community College (ACC) and Cultural Lounge invite current and prospective students to a discussion on the book “Citizen: An American Lyric,” by poet Claudia Rankine. The event is Saturday, April 28, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Carver Museum and Cultural Center, 1165 Angelina St.

Rankine’s poetry explores themes of citizenship in the United States. Participants are encouraged to prepare a spoken word poem related to the topic and will have three minutes to share their poem. Current and incoming ACC students are eligible to receive a grand prize $1,000 scholarship.

The event is part of this year’s Big Read program, a national initiative to promote reading in the community and on college campuses. The event is free and open to the public. Sponsors are ACC’s Creative Writing Department and Office of Equity and Inclusion.
