April forums address campus carry policies

Austin Community College students, faculty, and staff can learn about the state’s campus carry law and provide input on new policies regulating concealed guns on campuses at three forums in April.

ACC’s Campus Carry Implementation Task Force is hosting the forums to inform the college community about the law and gather feedback that will guide the committee’s policy recommendations.

As a public community college, ACC is required to implement campus carry legislation (Texas Senate Bill 11) beginning August 1. The law allows colleges some discretion to set “reasonable rules, regulations, and other provisions,” including creating “exclusion zones” that prohibit guns in certain campus areas.

The Campus Carry Implementation Task Force comprises students, faculty, staff, and representatives from each campus who are working with various college stakeholder groups and legal experts to develop policies that will be presented to ACC’s president and Board of Trustees for approval.
