The Austin Community College Board of Trustees has selected the lead architect for the college’s Rio Grande Campus renovation and a construction manager for its planned Leander Campus. A summary of other recent bond project activity follows:

The Bond Program Steering Committee continues to work with administrators, deans, and department chairs to align program requirements with available space.

Site utilities work near HBC is nearing completion. The elevator conversion in the new part of the former mall is complete and will be operational soon. Crews have finished removing storefront glass.

Leander Campus

At their November 2 regular meeting, trustees named American Constructors as the construction manager at-risk (CMR) for the Leander Campus project.

Architectural programming is nearing completion, and architects soon will begin the schematic design phase.

The project team met with representatives from the City of Leander, Leander ISD, and adjacent property owners in October to discuss proposed development on or near the campus site, including a YMCA and an early college high school.

The Leander Campus Steering Committee reviewed campus building and site master plan options with representatives from Pfluger Associates, SmithGroupJJR, and MWM DesignGroup. The group discussed long-term options for campus buildings and parking and other structures on the site.

Rio Grande Campus – Main Building

ACC trustees named Studio 8 Architects as the lead architect/engineer (A/E) for the Rio Grande Campus renovation.

The college plans to prepare temporary space in the former Highland mall facility for dance, art, and theater programs to use during the Rio Grande renovation.

Round Rock Campus

Programming discussions are ongoing. The college is considering converting space in Building 3000 to a dedicated health sciences lab; one of the health sciences classrooms would be converted to a simulation lab. Space vacated by the Learning Lab, which would move to the new building, could be renovated for a multipurpose room.

At their November 2 meeting, the board heard presentations by three A/E firm finalists for the Elgin Campus project — O’Connell Robertson, BLGY Architecture, and Architecture Plus.

Three A/E firm finalists for the Hays Campus project — Brinkley Sargent Wiginton, Randall Scott, and Gensler — also presented proposals to trustees.

A/E selection for both projects is expected in December. The Facilities and Construction Office has issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for a CMR for each of the projects.

Land banking for workforce center

The college will proceed with the previously contracted purchase of more than 100 acres in southeast Travis County (near SH 130) for a future career and technical education center. It expects to close on the property later this year.
